The Establishment of an Annual "Life Sunday" by NWMN Churches

WHEREAS, the church has traditionally ordered its annual calendar according to various celebrations of important moments in the life of Christ such as his birth, death, and resurrection and that these dates have provided teaching opportunities to disciple Christians on such topics as the meaning of Christ’s death and how the resurrection teaches about eternal life.

WHEREAS, the Scriptures affirm that human life begins at conception and teaches that the announcement of the conception of Christ took place nine months before his birth and is observed in a day called the “annunciation.”

WHEREAS, this day provides an opportunity to teach Christians that Jesus was Jesus from the moment of conception, not just the moment of birth. With Jesus as the prototype we know that we also are fully ourselves and fully human from the moment of conception.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we call upon churches of the Northwest Ministry Network to use a Sunday near March 25th of each year to draw upon the announcement of the conception of Christ to teach that life begins at conception.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we acknowledge that the General Council has adopted a Sanctity of Human Life Resolution with which we concur. The purpose of this Life Sunday resolution is simply to promote a life emphasis built upon the life of Jesus and to promote it in a grace filled manner.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that while setting aside a Life Sunday to teach that life begins at conception, churches are also encouraged to use this opportunity to communicate God's unconditional love and forgiveness to those who have navigated the difficult and traumatic experience of terminating a pregnancy. Churches are encouraged to incorporate concepts of redemption, hope, and healing and to provide resources and counsel for those who may respond with questions or may have a presenting need.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Life Sunday is not to discourage other life emphasis already established by some churches but rather to be an addition to what is already observed or another viable option to consider implementing into their annual church calendar.

Adopted by the 92nd Northwest Ministry Network Annual Conference in April 2010.
