Sabbatical

It is from personally experiencing the benefits of a sabbatical leave that I provide you with resources that will aid in the development and implementation of a pastoral sabbatical leave policy in your church. It is my sincere hope that discussions will be held and positive action taken toward the development of a healthy sabbatical leave policy in response to the faithful ministry of your pastoral team. I realize that the unique design and circumstances of each local church demand that a sabbatical policy be tailored to your specific needs. However, this should not prevent us from taking steps to introduce the idea to your church leadership.  I encourage you to thoughtfully and prayerfully act to develop this much needed benefit, in whatever form it might take, for you and your fellow pastoral leaders.

Recognizing the importance and necessity for busy pastors to have an opportunity to take an extended break for renewal and refreshment, Lilly Endowment in 2000 introduced a new competitive grants program. The program awards grants to congregations that offer a program for the renewal of their pastor and, at the same time, give the congregations themselves an opportunity to better themselves as vital places of worship and mission.

What is drawing you towards a sabbatical? What is your intention for your time away from work? How does your sabbatical fit in to the larger purpose of your life?  These are important questions to answer if you are to make the most of your time away from work. Depending upon how you answer these questions, your approach to your sabbatical (and indeed the whole of your life) will be different.
